End of an Era: Salsa Dancing at La Jolla Marriott Ceases

Monday, April 3, 2017

You read that right.  Effective immediately the La Jolla Marriott will cease to have salsa dancing on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.  In a message posted by Rumba Entertainment, the organizer for the salsa nights, they cite lack of support on the part of the hotel to continue the nights.  You can read the entire message here below:

Personally I’m disappointed in the hotel management’s decision to end support of its salsa dancing nights, but it reflects a real challenge that the salsa community faces in San Diego.  That challenge is namely to weigh the support of the local dance community versus making sure they maintain a profitable business. I’m going to miss the La Jolla Marriott salsa nights and great alternative it provided for so many days of the week.

I’m hoping another venue opens up soon to fill this large void left by a much beloved salsa dance venue.

Feel free to leave comments below.

See you all on the dance floor.

Hope you are all doing well.  It has been a while since the La Marriott has been closed for renovation but we recently received word from Evelio Fuentes at Rumba Entertainment that the club will re-open on June 8th, 2013.

The grand re-opening follows a major renovation to the club including an expansion to the dance floor and an upgraded dancing surface.  More details will be following soon but for now the La Jolla Marriott is slated to open its doors again for salsa dancing on Saturday June 8th.  Mark your calendars and see you all at the new La Jolla Marriott for some great salsa dancing.

UPDATE: Salsa Dancing at the La Jolla Marriott Ends Friday November 16th

Saturday, November 10, 2012

In with the new and out with the old, at least temporarily.

With the advent of a new salsa club in La Jolla we’ve learned some more details about the beloved salsa venue at the La Jolla Marriott. That club is closing in order to take on building renovations and should be open again in a few months. In the meantime the new venue at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla will take its place and provide salsa dancing on the same nights that were customarily found at the old venue.

The last day for salsa dancing at the Marriott is this Friday November 16th so come out for one last dance at the La Jolla Marriott Friday.

See you on the dance floor!

Hyatt Regency La Jolla to be San Diego’s Newest Salsa Venue

Saturday, November 3, 2012

Seems like there will be some changes coming to the San Diego salsa dance scene in November.  Rumba Entertainment announced recently that they are launching a new dance venue at the Hyatt Regency Hotel La Jolla.  Although I’m excited to see a new venue start, it’s not clear at this point what will happen with La Jolla’s other top salsa club located at the La Jolla Marriott.  As I learn more information I’ll make sure to relay all of it to you.

The Grand opening for the new Hyatt Regency Hotel La Jolla salsa club is November17.  The new club is slated to run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays after it is open.  More details on the grand opening will be up soon on RitmoBello.com.

See you all at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla for SanDiego’s newest salsa dance location!

New Salsa Club Noche Latina Onyx Room Grand Opening Party September 18 in the Gaslamp!

Sunday, September 16, 2012

San Diego has seen some movement in the salsa club scene as of late with some closures and management changes.  With the closure of salsa Tuesdays at the Keating Hotel, a new opportunity for great salsa is starting this Tuesday September 18th in the Gaslamp Quarter. The new club, presented by Rumba Entertainment, will launch at the Onxy Room located on Fifth Avenue.  The club has a good reputation as a regular club so it will be interesting to see how it fares as a salsa dance venue.

For more information and to RSVP for the Grand Opening party check out the event page on the San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group.

See you all Tuesday at the Grand Opening of Noche Latina Onyx Room!

La Jolla Marriott Latin Dancing: San Diego’s Longtime Salsa Attraction

Thursday, February 3, 2011

If you’ve ever been to the La Jolla Marriott you know it is not your typical salsa club. Hosted in the Character’s Bar & Grill area of the hotel, the venue consistently serves as a nice choice for salsa dancing on Fridays and Saturdays.  The unique location of the club makes it easy for ordering a dinner, sharing some drinks and even playing some pool in between dances.  Having a dual purpose of  a sports bar is also a bonus if you care to catch the latest sports figures while you visit.  One thing to note is that if you like a very well lit salsa club as opposed to a darker venue this is your place.  The venue tends to keep the lights on so you can see your dance partner as you dance.

Serena Cuevas from Deseo Dance usually teaches the complimentary lesson starting at 8pm.  For those of you unfamiliar with Serena check out this interview I conducted a while back soon after her work with Gatorade.  She is currently starting up new lessons too for anyone interested (you can see the info below).

Along with other newer venues like the San Diego Salsa Jam, the La Jolla Marriott serves as an integral part of San Diego’s salsa dance scene.  You can see a complete list of dance venues on our club list here on Ritmo Bello.

See you all on the dance floor,

John ;-)
