That’s right! San Diego is gaining a new salsa dance venue and the Grand Opening is set for Tue Sept 14, 2010 at the Keating Hotel. The event will also be a celebration of Mexican Independence featuring Orquesta Tabaco y Ron and Oddy Pena y su Bachata Magic.
There will be multiple dance shows and a free salsa lesson beginning at 8:30pm courtesy of Ooh La La Dance Dance Company. If you plan on going make sure you get there before 10pm to get in free, otherwise it’s $10.00.
If you haven’t been to the Keating Hotel before it’s easy to find with access through the Merk restaurant on 818 5th Street, next to Croces.
After 22 years, Café Sevilla is trading their subterranean salsa dance venue on Fourth Avenue for a larger, more heavily trafficked Fifth Avenue location.
Although I love the current location for Café Sevilla, I have to admit the changes sound good. The new location between J and K streets will boast a larger dining room and tapas bar than the current location. Even better is the expanded room for live entertainment as the club will take advantage of the 3,000 more square feet they will gain in the move.
I think the new location on Fifth Avenue will help the restaurant and bar attract a whole new group of people who have yet to experience Café Sevilla. As a dancer I’m going to appreciate the same great Café Sevilla but with lots more room to go out and dance. As I find out more information about these changes I’ll let you know. Until then let’s keep enjoying the current location on Fourth Avenue and join us on August 4th for the San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group’s next 1st Wednesday Event.
Okay, so by now you’ve probably heard about the 1st Wednesday’s of the Month Meetup.com events at Cafe Sevilla (we’ve been hosting them for more than a full year now!). Well, for those that have made it out in the past you know that there is a simple formula for how they work: 1) Come out with the intent to have a good time 2) Meet new people & 3) Do something different to interact with your local San Diego salsa community.
This month the theme is to “Spring into Salsa Dancing” with everything that this implies. If you’ve been sitting on the fence about coming out to our events or if you’ve gone in the past and it’s been some time since you’ve been, I encourage you to come check it out. The event is free and Cafe Sevilla has been gracious to offer drink specials to our group members for the night (see the RSVP page for details).
The event is open to everyone so feel free to come alone or bring any friends. We’ll meet downstairs at 8pm in the VIP area of club that will be reserved for our group. Just look for the Meetup.com signs. Valerie will give a free salsa lesson starting at 8:30pm.
For full details and to RSVP please check out the special event page here on the San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup group. If you have additional questions feel free to contact me on Twitter @RitmoBello. See you all Wednesday April 7th!
The theme for this February edition is “Dress in Red” so if you have a favorite red dress, pants, shoes, whatever this will be the night to wear it. Last year when we held this event at Cafe Sevilla the whole club was filled with people dressed in red and we hope to do the same this year.
This monthly event held at Café Sevilla is a great way to break the ice with new people in a safe and friendly environment.Don’t forget the event is FREE to attend!

The monthly Meetup.com events held on the first Wednesday of each month at Cafe Sevilla are a great way to meet other local salsa dancers in the San Diego area. The San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group allows anyone interested in salsa dance to find like minded people and connect with those who share their passion for the dance. The group is especially great for those new to San Diego and new to salsa dancing since it provides a safe environment in which to interact with other dancers.
If you have no idea what Meetup.com is all about, check out this informative video that does a good job explaining the concept. See you all Wednesday night at Cafe Sevilla!
Just a reminder that the San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group will be at Cafe Sevilla this Wednesday February 4th. It will be a great opportunity to meet group members and find out more information about the group itself. Don’t miss a great night of salsa dancing at one of San Diego’s best salsa clubs.
Cafe Sevilla launched a new YouTube video yesterday promoting their salsa dance nights at the club. I’ve noticed over the past couple of months a renewed interest on the part of the salsa club to reinvigorate their 4 nights of weeks of dance. I think it’s great that the management and marketing department are taking a renewed interest in promoting salsa nights here, including opening up the venue to The San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group. Check out the RSVP page that is already set up on our website and watch the video here to see what its all about.
If you’ve been to the Balboa Theatre recently you know that the venue has hosted some amazing shows since its reopening.Indeed, as one of San Diego’s last great historic theatres (originally built in 1924 for you history buffs), the newly renovated theatre has done a great job of expanding out to all types of music.
This expansion also includes music like timba.Timba is similar to salsa but incorporates different styles from brazilian, R&B, hip hop and salsa to create a new sound. Timba traditionally is known to have Cuban roots and parallels salsa music’s development as its own entity.
We are lucky in San Diego to have two-time Grammy nominated Miami timba band Tiempo Libre performing live at the renovated Balboa Theatre.Tiempo Libre, classically trained in Cuba’s premiere conservatories, assembled for the first time as an authentic all-Cuban timba band in the United States.
Happy New Year everyone! I hope all of you had a safe and happy holiday season.
2009 marks not only a new year but new opportunities to go out and dance here in San Diego. The San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group calendar is full of new events for January including a new series of salsa dance nights at Cafe Sevilla.
Long known for great salsa dancing in the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego, the club is extending a welcome to meetup members to take advantage of reduced cover on the first Wednesday of each month. The first in this regular series of salsa nights begins on January 7th, 2009. To find out more information about the San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group and this specific event please visit the event page that is already setup.
Come out and start the New Year on a dancing foot!
How long will salsa dancing be available in San Diego’s downtown on Friday nights?
Hopefully for a long while since Aubergine’s debut of salsa dancing went extremely well, at least from a dancer’s perspective. While others may be evaluating the profitability of having salsa dancing at Aubergine in terms of drinks sold and other such factors, I think it’s equally important to look at the people and groups that were attracted to this new salsa night.
Indeed, the San Diego salsa community came out en masse to support the new venue. There were many familiar faces from the San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup , as well as major San Diego dance studios being represented. A number of notable performances were conducted by Majesty in Motion, A Time to Dance Studio, and the Sexy Salsa Divas . The video posted here shows the young ladies during the performance that night.
Whether or not the salsa night remains a normal mainstay for Aubergine, I think the majority of people in attendance appreciated the ability to have salsa dancing at a venue like Aubergine. I have to say that it was interesting to go from the part of the club that was hosting the salsa dancing and to visit the other areas of the club that were open to hip hop. I noticed upon my return to the salsa areas that many of the people from the hip hop room were curiously showing up to watch the salsa dancing. A couple of those people found themselves on the salsa dance floor too.
Overall, I think there is a future for salsa dancing in the Gaslamp Quarter on Friday nights. Let’s hope Aubergine thinks the same thought. Thanks to A Time to Dance Studio and other San Diego salsa supporters for bringing salsa dancing to downtown San Diego on Friday nights.
San Diego is a big convention town as we all saw with the recent Comic Con International Meeting here this last week. Every time there is a big convention in town I inevitably receive a ton of emails from people asking me where the best places to dance salsa here in San Diego. One thing I’ve noticed from these emails is surprise when the people I write to learn that there is not a regular salsa club that is open on Fridays and Saturdays in the Gaslamp Quarter . Indeed, the best salsa dancing downtown is located at Café Sevilla Tuesdays through Thursday in my opinion. Sometimes, though, it would be nice to have salsa dancing downtown on a Friday or Saturday night for a change.
Well, looks like change is coming our way, albeit for one night in August.Aubergine, the uber upscale restaurant and club venue , is opening its doors to salsa dancing on August 22nd , 2008. Located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter (and across the street from Café Sevilla), the club is known for its fashionable and unique vibe that would serve well as a salsa dancing venue. (Indeed, there are lots of places downtown that would be great salsa and Latin dancing venues but unfortunately the club owners haven’t been all that open to the idea).
The event is hosted by Angel and Tulane from A Time to Dance Studio who will be providing a lesson. There will also be dance performances by well known groups like Majesty in Motions Pro team and the Sexy Salsa Divas.
The San Diego Salsa and Latin Dancing Meetup Group will be in attendance at the event this night and I’ve organized a place to RSVP for the event . You can find out all the details about the event there including instructions on how to get placed on the VIP guest list.
